When Emira–who is black–is accused of kidnapping her young babysitting charge, her white employer, Alix, tries too hard to make it up to her. Emira just wants the whole thing to go away while she figures out her life, but it was caught on video.
Emira runs into the man who recorded it and the two start a relationship–but his interest in her may not be what it seems. Alix nurses an unhealthy fascination with Emira and her active social life, while Emira’s friends struggle with how to help her find her footing.
This debut is a lot of things: quarter-life crisis novel, social commentary on race and privilege, and a subtle takedown of microaggressions that’s worth the read and reflection.
First, I’m sorry I’ve been bad about visiting others’ blogs. Teaching from home was a bit overwhelming! I’ve read and enjoyed several books on your list including A Good Neighborhood, The Truants and Such a Fun Age. I also read Perfect Tunes, but the main character in that one drove me nuts. I’ve been curious about The Book of Longings, so it’s nice to hear you liked it. I see a couple others here, that I’ve not really paid much attention to, but probably should.
No apologies needed–it’s all been a little overwhelming around here as well, and I haven’t been to other blogs as much as I’d like either 🙂 I’m not sure most of these will stay on my best of the year list–a few might, but I guess it depends on what comes up in the next few months! Even before COVID, the books coming out this year just haven’t been wowing me.
No 5 stars?! My reading has been different than years’ past but I have had some 5 star reads. This last month, though, derailed me. Go-to genres left me cold and reading at all was difficult. June has felt like nothing but bad news all the way around.
I loved Little Family as well, but it’s not gotten much attention. I’m wondering if the pandemic has changed publishing schedules- fewer books being released because local events are impossible to host etc.
Have you read Saving Ruby King? I’m hearing great things about it. I started it today and the writing is strong- always a good sign for me.
I know! Does that count as a reading slump? I have loved some audiobooks, so that helps. And there was a backlist book or two that got 5 stars–this is all just new books in 2020 that I read in print.
Also, soon after posting this I finished The Vanishing Half–first new 5-star book of the year!
I’ve been seeing Saving Ruby King around a lot as well and I definitely want to read it. I think the pandemic has definitely affected publishing, but I also heard rumblings at the beginning of the year that publishers were delaying books because of the election, because they’d be overshadowed by what is a sure to be a…mess, to put it mildly.
My two favorite books from 2020 so far are The Vanishing Half and The Prettiest Star. I’m read Saving Ruby King and it’s great so far, but we’ll see how it goes.
Oh, The Prettiest Star! I had a library hold on this one and it lapsed before I could get to it. Sounds like I need to revisit–the synopsis reminded me of The Great Believers and A Little Life, two of my all-time favorites. Thanks for the reminder and the recommendation.
